The Village

One most beautiful views of the kingdom :

Overhanging the valleys of the Dordogne, the Cère and some Slaver, the city medieval of Loubressac raises on its headland its castle, its church and the roofs of its houses beaten by beautiful brown tiles. ” If Montal is capable of accommodating king, Loubressac possesses one most beautiful views of the kingdom ” wrote Savinien d’ Alquié in 1670. And it is true that the panorama which proposes down from its walls, the old strengthened village is magnificent ! Of this balcony of Haut-Quercy develops from north to south one of the most harmonious landscapes of the valley of the Dordogne : the castles of Turenne, Castelnau, Saint Laurent, Montal, the city of Saint-Céré and the first foothills of Massif Central. In addition, Loubressac also has intrinsic wealth.

One of the most beautiful villages of France :

Its narrow and sinuous alleys, its houses built in beautiful ochre stones, decorated with balconies and with staircases flowery or stocked with vine arbour and its former doors are so many treasures. To whom it is advisable to add, the church holy Jean-Baptiste, chapel of the 13th century with his Christ in glory and his pink marble lions of Carolingian origin. Beaten old tiles, the medieval houses of limestone get clearer hot reflections of the sun. Dominated by its castle a natural headland, a manor house of the 15th century which dominates the village of all its majesty. The village offers a wide view on the valley of the Dordogne and some Slaver. All this makes of Loubressac a charming city where life is enjoyable. More beautiful flowery village of the Lot, the village obtained in 1989 and 1990 the First prize of the flowery villages of Midi-Pyrénées. Of Loubressac leave numerous hiking trails which connect all the surrounding hamlets. By crossing them, the visitor will discover at random fountains or dolmens, and will result in the quite close Limestone plateau.

History :

Loubressac comes from the Latin LUPERCIACUM : domain of Lupercius. Celts, Gallo-Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, Francs, Vikings successively crossed or occupied the territory of what became Loubressac in the IXè century.

The first one Loubressac was in the said place the Low Church, where were the den and the church Saint-Peter. Hugues of Rouergue was the Lord of this territory and based the dynasty of Castelnau, who owned the seigneury of Loubressac until the XIIIè century, then it was the king of France until 1351, of which depended the Viscount of Turenne until 1738 then again the Baron de Castelnau before becoming common in the year X of the Republic.

The Hundred Years’ War brought ruins and sadness in Quercy. The village took refuge, by the XIVè century, behind the ramparts of the new castle built by Adhémar d’ Aigrefeuille, on a rocky spur.

The village was repopulated in the middle of the XVè century by Inhabitants of the Auvergne and Limousin. In the XVIè century, the village was rich, in full prosperity, but the religious wars interrupted this magnificent development.

Threatened by the exodus countryman in the XIXè century, Loubressac became again a village living thanks to the effort of his inhabitants and to the lovers of beautiful stones.
