Castles
- Castle of Castelnau-Bretenoux – 46130 Prudhomat – opened from May 2nd till December 31st. The castle raises itself at the end of a rocky tray forming a spur thanks to the presence of a natural weakness. Dominating the country says “of the four rivers”, it was the siege of an important barony stemming from the Carolingian quercynoise aristrocratie – the family of Castelnau de Bretenoux.
- Castle of Montal – 46400 saint Jean Lespinasse – opened from May 2nd till December 31st
Settled on an overhang dominating the valley of the Dordogne, the castle was built between 1519 and 1534 by Jeanne de Balsac, lady of Montal. Never finished, this masterpiece of the Renaissance distinguishes itself by the exceptional wealth of its sculptures which deserve royal palaces. Monumental staircase, tapestries and furniture of the XVIth and of the XVIIth century, inner courtyard the Renaissance. - Tours of Castelnau in Saint Laurent les Tours, 46400. Workshop and house of the tapestry-maker Jean Lurçat, habrite today a museum of its works. You can see the tours of Saint Laurent on the hill in front of Loubressac, from the window of the bathroom for example.
Caves
- Caves of the Merveilles – L’Hospitalet 46500 Rocamadour – opened from April 1th till November 4th
A geologic and prehistoric cave papered with a multitude of crystalline concretions and decorated with rock paintings dating 20000 years: hands, horses, deer, feline… - Caves of Lacave – 46200 Lacave – opened by the April 1st(Fools’s Day) on November 5th
After the access at the heart of caves by the small train, of room of the chaos, the visit continues on foot with a succsession of rooms, lakes to arrive at the biggest treasure of Lacave : the room of the marvels, 2000m ², where the effects of the black light make phosphorescent the alive concretions. - Caves of Presque – Secondary road 673 – 46400 saint Médard of Almost – opened by the April 1st on November 15th. Discovered in 1825 and fitted out in 1922, the Caves of Almost propose to the visitors a continuous suite of concretions of any forms and varied tints highlighted by an electric lighting. Besides these concretions, Caves offer with regard to numerous pillars stalagmitiques 8 10 meters away from top, some of a big sharpness as “Wax candles”.
The Abyss of Padirac
- 46500 Padirac – Opened from April 7th till November 7th. The Abyss of Padirac, the most famous of Europe, is considered as one of the biggest geological curiosities of France. It was investigated in 1889 by Edouard-Alfred Martel. After a vertiginous descent in 103m of depth, you embark on the subterranean river for a walk in boat. Then while you will discover the Big Drop, the huge stalactite of 60m of top, which, as suspended from a thread, seems to admire on the surface of the Lake of the Rain. You will accost and will continue on foot towards the room of the Big Dome, the vault of which rises in 94m of top. This one offers a multitude of concretions, waterfall of calcite, shaped by the nature during millions of years.
